What is irrigation and automatic watering systems
If you're unfamiliar with garden irrigation systems, you might be curious about automatic irrigation and how it operates. In essence, automatic irrigation takes the hassle out of watering your gardens and streamlines the process. By utilising concealed underground or garden bed pipelines and outlets, along with timers and valves, your plants can be watered how they should be, when they need to be. Water is a resource that we need to protect and use wisely - by using irrigation systems, you can save up to 80% of your typical garden water consumption.
Various irrigation systems are available, each tailored to water specific garden areas. For example, pop-up sprinkler systems are ideal for irrigating large lawn areas, while micro jets, sprays, and mini sprinkler systems are well-suited for watering expansive plant areas. For precise and effective watering of plants, soaker hose or drip irrigation systems are a preferred choice as they target the root zone.
On this page, we'll provide you with comprehensive details about each type of garden irrigation system, enabling you to select the one that best suits your garden's unique requirements. By incorporating an automatic irrigation system, you'll save valuable time and effort while ensuring your garden remains vibrant and well-maintained.
Sprays & Sprinkler Systems
Sprinkler and spray irrigation systems are popular choices for effectively watering specific areas in your garden. These systems consist of pipes with strategically placed sprinkler heads or spray nozzles that disperse water in controlled patterns. They are ideal for a variety of garden layouts and offer several benefits for maintaining a lush and healthy landscape.
Sprinkler systems are particularly well-suited for watering large lawn areas. There are two main types of garden sprinklers - rotors such as the Hunter PGP, and rotators such as the Hunter MP Rotator. The difference between the two lies in their water distribution methods: the Hunter PGP uses a rotating stream to cover a large area with fewer heads, making it ideal for wide, open spaces, whereas the Hunter MP Rotator features multiple rotating streams that deliver water more slowly and uniformly, which is excellent for achieving precise coverage and water efficiency.
While spray systems are excellent for irrigating flower beds, shrubs, and other plant groupings, their ability to cover broad or defined spaces makes them versatile solutions for diverse garden designs.
Soaker Hose System
These flexible hoses are designed with porous material, allowing water to seep out slowly and evenly along their length. As a result, the surrounding soil and plant roots receive a gentle and consistent flow of water.
Soaker hoses are a valuable addition to any garden due to their numerous advantages. They support water conservation by delivering water directly to the root zone, minimizing evaporation and runoff, which helps conserve precious water resources. Additionally, soaker hoses aid in weed control by reducing water contact with surrounding soil, creating an unfavourable environment for weed growth.
Their flexibility allows for easy positioning around plants, making them suitable for gardens of various shapes and sizes. Installation is a breeze as soaker hoses can be effortlessly laid on the soil surface or buried slightly, or covered with mulch, for discreet and efficient watering. Moreover, by connecting soaker hoses to timers, you can automate the watering process, providing convenience and flexibility for gardeners.
Drip Irrigation Systems
Drip irrigation systems, including drip line irrigation, offer a popular and effective solution for watering large gardens, landscapes, and extensive crop areas. Drip line tubing is equipped with pre-installed drippers, spaced at regular intervals, ensuring direct delivery of water to the roots of plants. This targeted approach reduces water consumption, making drip line systems an eco-friendly choice for water-conscious gardeners.
With drip line irrigation, you can enjoy the benefits of water efficiency and healthier plant growth while conserving precious water resources. These systems are easy to install and highly customisable, fitting the unique needs of any garden or landscape layout. Typically, the droppers are spaced 30cm apart, but they can be found with spacing of 15cm, 45cm, or even 60cm. The space between the pipes should match the space between the droppers.
Experience the convenience and environmental benefits of drip irrigation, ensuring your garden remains vibrant and thriving while reducing water waste. Why don't you read our blog post about drip line vs porous pipe to find out more?
Pumps & Tanks
We are often asked if our system will need a pump and a tank, and the truthful answer is that it entirely depends on the situation.
Pumps:
Our range of high-quality pumps ensures optimal water flow and pressure for various irrigation requirements. Centrifugal Pumps are perfect for maintaining steady water pressure in residential and commercial applications. Submersible Pumps are ideal for deep water sources, providing efficient and strong pressure. Booster Pumps enhance existing water pressure to ensure even distribution across your garden.
Tanks:
Water storage tanks provide a reliable water supply, especially during dry periods. Above-Ground Tanks: Easy to install and maintain, available in various sizes. They are visible, but fascias can put around these to hide and conceal them. Other options are underground Tanks, which are discreet storage solutions for larger systems. The ultimate system, is a Rainwater Harvesting Tanks, which are eco-friendly options that collect and store rainwater for irrigation use.
